Description

The Manor House is a timber-frame manor house dating to the 16th century, with subsequent development in the 17th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of timber, flint, stone, and brick, with a plain tile roof. The building has a T-shaped plan, standing three storeys high with attics, and includes a single-storey addition between the north and west wings. A remnant of the original 16th-century manor house remains to the southeast, heightened and extended westward in the 17th century, and further restored and extended to the north in the late 19th century.

The principal facade faces east and features an off-centre, close-studded gable dating to the 17th century, with a jettied second floor supported by 17th-century joists. A 16th-century range runs north-south, jettied at first-floor level, and terminates in a rebuilt brick stepped gable with a 19th-century end stack. The jetty has been rebuilt in brick with stone quoins. Two 19th-century stone mullion and transom windows with wrought iron casements flank the entrance door, which has a moulded oak frame with carved spandrel panels displaying the rebus of Catton. Above the door are further casement windows with glazing bars, and an oriel window with a moulded frame and cornice, supported by brackets. To the north of the gable is a 19th-century range with three windows on the first floor. The ground floor has casement windows with moulded brick transoms, while the first floor features casement windows with glazing bars. A moulded brick corbel course runs below the first-floor wall plate. Dormers with three-light casement windows and glazing bars are positioned in the roof. Two elaborate 19th-century brick gable stacks and a central gable stack are also present.

The west wing, dating to the 17th century, is constructed of flint with reused dressed stone and is two storeys high. It contains scattered 19th-century fenestration of casement and sash windows. The west wing has coved eaves, brick kneelers, parapet eaves, and timber caps. Two gabled dormers with two-light casement windows and glazing bars are present. A 19th-century gateway, located within a south wall conservatory, features a moulded stone surround and an oak frame with carved spandrels. The gateway is set within a wall of knapped flint with stone dressings.

The interior contains good 19th-century details, including a 16th-century oak dog-leg staircase extending over two storeys. There are deep oak joists with double tenons into rebated transverse beams, and wall posts with braces connecting to the tie beams in the 16th-century range. The 17th-century roof is a six-bay, heavy oak butt-purlin structure running east-west.
