Description
The Recruiting Sergeant Inn is a public house dating from the 18th century, with an earlier core that dates back to the late 16th century. It features a colourwashed brick and flint construction topped with a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys and attics, with a continuous rear outshut. Its asymmetrical facade includes three windows and an off-centre porch. Notable architectural details include a brick plinth, platbands at the first floor and attic levels on the gable, and a pilaster to the right of the porch. The eaves are adorned with brick dentils. Most of the inserted windows are from the 19th century, consisting of four lights with transoms. The building has parapet gables with central axial and gable stacks, as well as two gabled dormers featuring two-light casement windows. The brick porch has a central door with a semi-circular arch and curved gables supported by brick kneelers. The eastern two-storey section may be older and also has an asymmetrical facade with three windows, one of which has a segmental brick arch with a key block. The east gable wall displays a brick diaper pattern on a flint background.
