Description
The Old Forge is a blacksmith's house that dates back to 1581, with an extension likely added in 1732. It features a pebble-dashed timber frame sitting on a flint plinth and brick, topped with a thatched roof. The building has an 'L'-shaped plan, based on an extended three-bay design, and consists of two storeys with a lean-to on the west side. The windows are irregularly arranged and consist of 20th-century casement styles. The roof rises in height, aligning with an axial stack. The east gable wall showcases flint panels, a brick kneeler, a date stone, brick tumbling in, and a parapet verge with an internal gable stack. Inside, there is an open brick fireplace supported by timber bressummers. The wall framing from the 16th century includes jowled posts, and there is an inserted axial bridging joist in the hall, which is supported over the fireplace by a 17th-century moulded timber bracket. The floor joists are closely spaced, with stopped and chamfered beams. The roof was possibly rebuilt in the early 18th century.
