Description
The Cawston War Memorial is located in the footpath at the center of Cawston Cemetery. Made of Clipsham limestone, it features a wheel-head cross that rises from a lantern on a tall, octagonal shaft. This shaft is set on a square plinth, which itself stands on a two-stepped base made of brick and limestone. The arms of the cross head are finished with carved trefoils, while the lantern is adorned with carved quatrefoils enclosing rosettes on each side and has pinnacles at each corner.
The main inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF CAWSTON WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE." The names of local servicemen who died in the First World War are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth. Additionally, the front face of the upper stage of the base includes the inscription "1939 – 1945," with the names of three men who fell in the Second World War listed below. All inscriptions are incised.
The memorial is surrounded by a raised, circular flowerbed, which contains a square marble plaque that states: "THIS WAR MEMORIAL WAS RE-DEDICATED 9TH JUNE 2001 HAVING BEEN RESTORED AFTER LIGHTNING DAMAGE." This inscription is also incised and painted black.
