Description
Number 12 (Connaught Villa) and Number 14 (Acacia Villa) are a pair of villas built in 1849 by W. Austin. They are constructed of red brick with gault brick dressings and have artificial stone window arches, topped with slate roofs, and designed in the Italianate style.
The exterior features two storeys and a six-window range, with a central giant pilaster. Each house has a three-window range, with a central recessed half-glazed door beneath a plain fanlight, flanked by a double and a triple 1/1 horned sash window, the triple sash being in the centre. The windows have arched heads, and there is a gault brick platband. On the first floor, each house has a central 1/1 horned sash under arched heads, with one double 1/1 horned sash on the outside and a Venetian window in the centre, both featuring 1/1 horned sashes. A gault brick eaves cornice rises over the four larger windows. The gable ends are shaped, with internal stacks and a central ridge stack. There is a single recessed bay set back on the north and south returns.
Number 12 includes an arched conservatory on the south return, which has a cast-iron sole plate and cast-iron glazing bars fitted with lap-glazed panes. The rear elevation features a two-storey hipped central extension with two- and three-light casement windows.
Inside, the villas have stick-baluster staircases with wreathed handrails and turned newels, and the principal rooms are fitted with six-panelled doors.
