Description

93 and 95 Market Place is a house built in the early 19th century that has been used as a shop and accommodation since the mid-19th century. It was subdivided into two units in the late 19th century.

The building is constructed of rendered and colour-washed brick and flint, topped with a roof covered in black-glazed pantiles. It faces west over the Market Place and has an approximately rectangular plan, with a large 20th-century extension at the rear.

The exterior features a two-storey, three-bay design with a pitched roof and an internal gable-end brick chimney stack on the right. There are two late-19th-century flat-topped dormer windows fitted with casements. The central late-19th-century doorcase includes square pilasters with tall recessed panels and a plain architrave. The door, which has glazed upper panels, is not original. On either side of the door are 20th-century shop fronts: the left one has a large projecting fifteen-light bay window with a door to the right, while the right side features a canted bay window without glazing bars and a door to the right, set within a doorcase matching the earlier style. Above the right door is a rectangular cast iron Fire Plug plaque that reads ‘FP’. The first floor is illuminated by three six-over-six pane sash windows that are slightly recessed and set within plain, painted surrounds. Above these windows are four circular wall-tie plates.

Inside, the ground floors have been opened up for retail areas.
