Description

46 and 48 Market Place is a former town house built in the late 18th century. It was partly converted into two houses with shops by the early 19th century. Number 46 became an International Stores around 1904, while number 48 was converted into a bank by 1928. Both properties have undergone later 20th-century and early 21st-century alterations for retail use, including the installation of two new shop fronts in 2024.

The buildings are constructed of white Suffolk brick, with red brick on the south gable and render on the north gable. The roof of number 46 is covered with red pantiles, while number 48 has black-glazed pantiles.

The exterior features three storeys and five bays. The early 21st-century shop front of number 48 spans the three right-hand bays and mimics the early 20th-century shop front from when it was an International Stores. It is framed by triangular-pedimented pilasters and includes a canted and recessed doorway on the off-centre left, with a half-glazed door. This doorway is flanked by one- and two-light display windows, all above glazed brick stallrisers. The windows are divided by colonnettes with small spandrels that support a thin transom light, reflecting the position of a former ventilation grille in the early 20th-century shop front. The shop front of number 46 occupies the two left-hand bays and features a half-glazed door, with a plate-glass display window to the right above a glazed brick stallriser.

On the first and second floors, separated by a plat band, there are five one-over-one horned sash windows, all with painted surrounds; those on the first floor are eared. The gabled roof has an internal gable-end stack to the north, and the southern gable shows minor tumbling. At the rear, there is a three-storey wing.
