Description
The Retreat is a house located in New Buckenham, dating from the late 16th century. It was remodeled around 1750, refaced around 1840, and restored in the 1970s. The building features a timber frame with wattle and daub infill behind a brick exterior and has a slate roof. It is two storeys high, with a central door set in a moulded case beneath a dentilled cornice. There is one sash window on each side of the door and three more on the first floor, all of which are late 20th-century additions under gauged skewback arches. The eaves cornice is coffered and features dentils. The roof is gabled with internal gable stacks.
At the rear, there are two 18th-century gabled wings that form an F shape, with 20th-century detailing. Between these wings stands a 16th-century gabled privy tower, which also has 20th-century windows. The interior has been significantly altered but retains close studding in the exposed framing, chamfered bridging beams, and a 19th-century king post roof in the front range.
