Description

Pickwick Cottage is a house dating from the 15th century with substantial alterations in the mid-19th century. It is timber framed and now has a brick facing, with a pantiled roof. The house is two storeys high with a dormer attic. The central door is within a fluted case. To the right is a sash window, and a 20th-century bow window is located to the left. There are three sash windows on the first floor, all with glazing bars. A two-storey extension, resembling the original, is attached to the north. Rusticated quoins are visible on the south return. The gabled roof has two flat dormers and casements. A large central ridge stack sits on a plinth. Sash windows are found on the south elevation, alongside an arched attic light. An outshut is attached to the east. A privvy tower, featuring medieval openings and a stair turret, is also present. Surviving storey-height timber framing from the original construction is visible inside the north extension on the ground floor, with more complete framing above. The interior features close studding and arched wind bracing in the roof.
