Description
This is a school and school house, built in 1842. It was erected by John David Hay Hill of Gressenhall Hall. The building is constructed of brick with painted stone dressings, and has slate roofs. The plan is irregular, with the school house attached to the north. The school house is a two-story, three-bay building with a slightly projecting, gabled central bay. This bay features a three-light mullion and transom window on the first floor, set beneath a four-centred arch. A shield is set in the gable. Five flat-headed windows, each with three lights and arched lights beneath rectangular hood moulds, are also present. A pair of identical doorways, with four-centred arches and boarded doors fitted with ornate hinges, are located at the junction with the school building. An axial chimney stack features a sawtooth cornice and narrow pilaster strips. The school itself is a single-story building, with a slightly projecting, gabled centre bay containing a Gothic window similar to the one on the school house. It is flanked by one two-light and one three-light flat-headed window, each with arched lights and rectangular hood moulds. The school has a pair of octagonal chimney shafts. Rear extensions have been added to both buildings.
