Description

Sparrow Green Farmhouse is probably of late 16th century origin, with a later 17th century brick facing, and it has undergone 20th century alterations. It is a timber-frame building, faced with brick except for parts of a side wing. The roof is tiled with pantiles. The farmhouse was originally intended to be arranged around an east-facing plan with a central porch and a single projecting side wing. The building is two storeys high with an attic. The central two-storey porch has a rebuilt gable. The entrance has a semicircular headed panelled door within a rectangular opening, with chamfered reveals; the door is partially glazed. A sash window with glazing bars sits above the entrance. The original long mullion window's chamfered reveals are still visible on either side. Four symmetrically positioned, late 20th century four-light casement windows of a discordant design are also present. Two fossilized skewback arches remain. The side wing has a returned crow-stepped brick gable with a stack. A small, ovolo-moulded two-light mullion window is located in the southern return of the gable-end. The first floor of the front facade is rendered timber frame. There are two 3-light late 20th century windows, two doorways, and one re-used seven-light mullion window on the front. A small gabled dormer window is also present. The rear gable-end shows an apparent tie and arched brace. A single five-light mullion window is located at the rear of the main block. A blind sloping dormer, likely accommodating a staircase, is situated behind a stack. A central axial stack is present on the main block, and a front gable-end stack on the side wing. Later lean-tos have been added to the rear.
