Description

Union House, formerly known as Union Workhouse, is a former workhouse that now serves as a museum and offices. It was built in 1777 and is constructed of brick with pantile roofs. The main block features a symmetrical facade with two storeys and is flanked by projecting side wings, forming a courtyard. The facade has five bays, excluding the side wings, with the three central bays slightly advanced and topped by a pediment that includes a clock face in the tympanum. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, set beneath skewback arches with cambered soffits. The three central bays also have an additional level of pivot windows with glazing bars. There are two doorways, one on each side, each with semicircular fanlights. The building has a plain platband and a moulded brick modillion cornice, along with a sawtooth cornice at the rear. An arched bell cupola is situated on the roof ridge.

The adjoining wing has two storeys, with 14 bays on the eastern branch and 12 on the southern branch. It features two square, taller, three-storey blocks at the angle and end of the south wing, both topped with pyramidal roofs. The former continuous portico, which consisted of semicircular arches, has been glazed with sash windows and some lunettes. The upper storey contains sash windows with glazing bars and a plain platband. There are various later additions at the rear of both sections.
