Description

Lyng House is a farmhouse built in 1734, as indicated by the engraving on a west gable tie-ends, which also form the initials I.B. The building is constructed of brick with pantile roofs and features a rectangular main block alongside a lower service wing that is contemporary to the main structure. It stands two storeys tall with an attic, while the service wing is one storey with an attic.

The main block is symmetrical, consisting of seven bays, and has a central late 18th-century raised and fielded panelled door set within a pedimented doorcase supported by pilasters. Above the door is a blind window that displays a Norwich Union insurance plaque numbered 10282. The original openings have modern aluminium windows, though two late 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars remain flanking the front door, rendered blind by the late 18th-century entrance hall, which features plaster coved niches filling the window spaces. The ground floor windows are adorned with skewback arches, and there is a plaster coved cornice throughout.

The gable-end stacks include an eastern stack with angled shafts, which may be remnants of an earlier structure. The service wing contains one original four-light mullion and transom window beneath a skewback arch, and it also has a plaster coved cornice. Two late 19th-century gabled dormers with shaped barge boards have been added.

Inside, the house primarily features late 18th-century elements, including one surviving duck's nest fire grate and several surrounds with pilasters and moulded and carved mantelpieces. The hall has a York stone floor and a staircase with square section balusters on an open string, shaped tread ends, and a swept handrail. The original butt-purlin roof is also intact.
