Description

The Angel Inn is a public house that dates back to the 17th century, with later alterations. Originally timber-framed, much of the structure has been replaced with brick, and it features pantile roofs. The building has a lobby entrance style typical of farmhouse designs, with an early 19th-century addition that replaced the eastern section. The brick facing of the timber frame is contemporary with this addition.

The inn is two storeys high and has irregular window arrangements in the original part, including a doorway beneath a skew-back arch opposite the stack and a two-light casement window above. On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century four-light mullion window beneath a skew-back arch, with a modern three-light casement window above it. The building has dentil cornices, a steeply pitched roof, and a massive axial stack with four rebuilt octagonal shafts on original moulded brick bases.

The addition has a symmetrical three-bay facade with a central doorway and four (formerly five) three-light hollow chamfered mullion windows with transoms at ground floor level, topped by a hipped roof. There are various later additions to the sides and rear of the building.

Inside, the inn features ogee moulded bridging joists with exceptionally elaborate stops, as well as chamfered common joists with barred stops. There is a former staircase located on the entrance side of the stack. The Angel Inn is reputed to have historical associations with the family of Abraham Lincoln.
