Description

Lodge Cottage, located approximately 370 metres southeast of Letton Hall, is a pair of cottages that have been combined into a single dwelling. They date from the late 18th century to early 19th century and are possibly designed by Sir John Soane. The building is constructed of rendered brick with a mostly black-glazed pantile roof and features a rendered brick central ridge stack. It has a symmetrical plan in the Gothick style, standing two storeys high with a two-window range of two-light leaded casements above two similar leaded casements, all with Y-tracery and pointed arched heads. There are plank doors with similar heads at the far left and right.

A central projecting porch has a crow-stepped gable and side doorways, with evidence of a blocked arch at the front. The side elevations also display crow-stepped gables and tall two-light leaded windows that rise through both floors, again featuring Y-tracery and pointed arched heads. Above the gable is a quatrefoil window. The rear of the building has a full-length outshut with two-light casements, a door, and a brick stack.

Inside, the cottage features chamfered bridging beams, winder stairs, plank doors, dado panelling, and an open fireplace with a simple wooden surround and side cupboards. Although the cottages have been slightly altered, they form a cohesive group with the outbuilding range at the rear. Historically, these cottages are situated near Letton Hall, which was designed by Sir John Soane and built between 1783 and 1789. While there is no direct evidence linking these cottages to Soane, he was known to design Gothick cottages of a similar style at Wimpole Hall in Cambridgeshire in 1791, making the attribution plausible.
