Description

Letton Hall stables and walled garden consist of former stables built around 1880 and a later walled garden from approximately 1790. The walled garden is likely designed by Sir John Soane. The stables are constructed of brick with slate roofs and are arranged on three sides of a courtyard, with the rear wall of the central range forming one side of the walled garden.

The central range features a symmetrical two-storey centre block flanked by single-storey side wings. The centre block has three bays, highlighted by giant pilasters and an open pediment above the centre bay. The ground floor has semicircular headed openings, with a central boarded door and fanlight flanked by windows. The first floor has small windows beneath segmental arches, which also flank an upper two-leaf boarded door. All window frames are made of cast iron with glazing bars. The building includes a string course, moulded brick cornices, a hipped roof, and side stacks. A wooden clock turret with a fish scale cupola roof and a weather vane displaying the initials R.T.G. is also present.

The side ranges are not symmetrical, with a two-storey dwelling cum garages to the south, which is likely of a later date. The north range is single-storey except for two-storey end pavilions with pyramidal roofs. It has seven bays featuring two-light mullion and transom windows beneath skewback arches, semicircular headed doorways, and gault brick dentil cornices on the end bays. A central gabled lucam is also included.

The walled garden is rectangular in shape and has three entrances on the stables side. Two of these consist of semicircular headed arches with a segmental inner order flanked by pilasters. The iron hinges and lock mechanisms are set in stone blocks. The other walls are plain, with some later openings and buttressing.
