Description

Walnut House is a cottage dating from the 17th century and later. It is constructed of coursed flint with brick dressings and occasional header levelling courses, topped with a pantiled roof. The building has two storeys with an attic. The west facade features one two-light and one three-light 19th-century casement window in their original openings. A 19th-century panelled front door has been inserted into what was formerly a three-light ground floor window, while the original front door is located on the north side of the facade. There are two original small stair lights at the southern end and plain rectangular hood moulds above the ground floor openings. The gable end includes one small window with a rectangular hood mould, two oculi in the gable, and an internal stack. The rear facade is partly obscured by a later extension, which contains two two-light and one single-light cast iron casement windows with glazing bars in reduced original openings, also featuring plain rectangular hood moulds above the ground floor openings. The early 19th-century extension includes one late 19th-century sash window with vertical glazing bars and horns. There is a lower early side extension built in English bond brickwork, which has an 18th-century door combined with a three-light window beneath a single segmental arch. Inside, there is a winding stair beside the stack, with beams that have ogee and nicked chamfer stops, and a fireplace with corner paterae in the 19th-century extension.
