Description

HORNBEAM HOUSE AND SAUL'S WOOD COTTAGE are former village school and schoolmistress's house, now converted into two dwellings. They were likely built around 1874, probably by J P Seddon, and are in a style similar to the local church. The buildings are constructed of red brick with bands of vitreous brick, white brick, and stone dressings. They have steep slate roofs with pointed crestings. The two-storey buildings have gabled ends facing the road; the southern gable features an attic cusped roundel and four trefoil-headed lancet windows on the ground floor. The windows are square-paned, some with metal frames. There are gabled porches on both the north and south elevations. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
