Description
Ayot Place is a 15th-century hall house that underwent alterations and had a cross wing added in the early 17th century. The interior was modified in the early to mid-19th century. The building was restored and extended to the west in the early 20th century and around 1930, transforming it into a Tudor-style mansion. It features red brick, exposed timber frame, plaster, and nogging, with both old and machine tiles on the roof. The structure is U-shaped, with two storeys and gabled attics. The windows are wood and brick mullioned and transomed leaded windows. The entrance front has two central gables, with a close-studded left-hand side that includes an external chimney stack, representing the restored side elevation of the 17th-century cross wing. The east elevation facing the garden showcases old brickwork and a square window bay on the right-hand gable end. The south courtyard elevation features a curved pediment above a stone door surround, along with an obelisk and carved heads. There are two first-floor oriels. Inside the cross wing, there are two impressive Jacobean stone fireplaces located on the ground and first floor of the north wall. The hall has exposed heavy tie beams, one of which includes large braces and remnants of spandrel tracery.
