Description
The Church of St Peter, built in 1874 by J P Seddon, is a church designed in a polychromatic early Gothic style. It features red brick with a vitreous and white brick chequer pattern, along with diapering and banding, and has flush stone dressings. The roof is made of machine tiles with terracotta cresting. A tall spire is located on the south side, with a square base that slopes to a stone steeple, which includes a mosaic clock on the east face. The round apse has one, two, and three light lancets, while the wider nave contains recessed two and three light trefoiled lancets and a multi-light west window with a central rose.
The interior is an exceptionally complete example of church furnishings from around 1880. The chancel arch is an early work by the Martin Brothers, and the stained glass in the west window, designed by Seddon, dates from 1880. The nave features a barrel vaulted wooden roof, and the font is adorned with a floral frieze and marble pillars.
