Description

The Backhouse Room is a 17th century timber-framed building with one aisle, originally serving as the carthouse of Upper Handside farm. It was converted into a meeting room by Paul Mauger as a memorial to the climber Edward Backhouse, officially opened on 17th March 1923. The building features a modern brick plinth and weatherboarded infill, along with a hipped tile roof. There is some flint infill on the side, two dormer windows at the rear, and remnants of an external brick chimney. Inside, the roof and support timbers are exposed.
