Description

Long Meadow and Woodene are a pair of semi-detached houses built between 1846 and 1847 for the Chartist Co-operative Land Company. They are constructed of stuccoed brick with a Welsh slate roof. The design features a two-storey central block with a pediment, flanked by slightly recessed wings that were originally one storey. This arrangement is unique among other Chartist settlements. The house Woodene has sash windows, while Long Meadow has casement windows, with some glazing bars still visible.

In the pediment, there is a rectangular panel with sides that extend downwards, a design element used throughout O'Connorville. The original entrance was located on the right gable end of the one-storey wing, which now has a window instead of the entrance, and there is a similar panel in the gable. The left wing has been raised to two storeys and features a sash window at the front, with an additional one-storey block to the left that has a pedimented surround at its gable end entrance. The two-storey wing also includes a similar panel in the gable above a round light. The building has an axial ridge stack and extensions at the rear.

Although the interior has not been inspected, these houses are considered among the best surviving examples of the homes in O'Connorville, established by Chartist leader Feargus O'Connor as part of his Land Plan. This settlement was a significant development following Chartism and is seen as a precursor to Garden Cities. The community originally included a school and 35 cottages, each with two to four acres of land.
