Description
Sunnyside is a detached house built between 1846 and 1847 for the Chartist Co-operative Land Company. It is constructed of stuccoed brick and features a Welsh slate roof. The house has one storey and consists of three bays, with a slightly projecting pedimented center that includes a bay window addition and a rectangular panel on the bargeboards. The outer bays have sash windows set in reveals, and there is a plinth at the base. The return gables are adorned with rectangular panels that extend downwards, a design characteristic used throughout O'Connorville. The right end has a sash window, while a lean-to and a long low wing have been added to the left side. There are three stacks at the rear, now incorporated into a catslide roofed rear outshut addition. The interior has not been inspected. Sunnyside is considered one of the best surviving examples of houses in O'Connorville, which was founded by Feargus O'Connor, a leader of the Chartist movement. This settlement was the first established under his Land Plan and represents an important development following Chartism, as well as a precursor to Garden Cities. The settlement originally included a school and 35 cottages, each with two to four acres of land.
