Description

This is an aisled barn, likely dating to the 15th or 16th century, with a 17th-century roof truss. It was substantially altered in the 20th century. The barn is timber-framed, with weatherboarding and brick casing. It has a tiled roof. The building consists of six bays, with a hipped roof over the later end bays, which incorporate gablets. Porches are located in bays 2 and 5, facing away from Langleybury House. The exterior is red brick faced towards the house and the road, while the rest is weatherboarded. A 20th-century turret sits on the ridge. Inside, the barn features jowled arcade posts with slightly arched braces to cambered tie beams. Jowled wall posts are connected by passing braces, lap jointed to aisle ties and arcade posts to tie beams. The roof is a 17th-century clasped purlin roof, with queen struts on the central truss and angled struts to the outer trusses; scarf jointing is splayed and tabled.
