Description
Scots Hill Cottage is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with extensions added in the late 16th or early 17th century. It underwent alterations in the 18th century and was further extended around 1950. The core of the building is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a tiled roof. Originally, the cottage consisted of two bays with an additional bay at the rear and a porch added to the right around 1600. The structure has two storeys, with the entrance located in the original left bay, now featuring a 20th-century gabled timber porch. To the right, there are two casement windows on both floors, separated by a projecting band. The original left end post is covered with stained board. There is a two-storey gabled former entry porch on the right, along with an 18th-century external stack at the right end, which has offsets. A stack is also present at the rear right over the one-bay early addition, and there is a lean-to on the right return. The roof is hipped to the left. Inside, the cottage features an exposed frame, a ground floor stop-chamfered beam, an 18th-century bread oven, and a staircase with stud partitions in the left bay, likely added during the early extensions. The structure includes cambered tie beams and wall plates supported by diagonal braces, with queen struts to collars clasping the purlins. The 1950 additions are not of special interest.
