Description
Nos. 1 and 3 St Peter's Street is a late 17th-century building that features a facade with two storeys and an attic, displaying seven windows on the first floor. Originally constructed in the early 17th century, the house has undergone various alterations over the years. It has a high-pitched tiled roof adorned with three gabled dormers that have latticed casements. The eaves cornice is deep and modillioned. The exterior is made of brown brick with red and blue brick dressings. The first-floor windows are sash windows with thick glazing bars set in flush box frames, and they feature moulded brick keystones. The central window, which is in a slightly projecting red brick bag, has been lengthened to create a door that leads out to a small balcony with 17th-century wrought iron railings. The ground floor has modern shop fronts on both the left and right sides. Steps lead up to the central door, which has eight fielded panels framed by a plain wooden architrave.
Inside, there are several older features, including massive tie beams and collar beams with closely set posts visible in the attic. The attic floor has a very heavy central beam that runs the entire length of the house. One first-floor room has a close-studded timber wall with a half rail, while another features more widely spaced framing with arch braces. Many heavy oak plank floors remain, along with some Jacobean panelling. A moulded beam dating from around 1600 can be found on the staircase, which has been modernised. The building was demoted from grade II* due to the exterior being spoiled by modern shop fronts.
