Description
Thatched Cottage is a house dating from the 16th century, with a date of 1579 noted on the front and formerly known as the Warrener's House, with '1680' marked on the chimney. It was owned by the manor until 1803 and has undergone alterations and extensions, particularly to the west in 1939-40, and a single-storey extension to the east in 1960. The building features a timber frame with exposed framing and roughcast plaster panels, and the sill has been renewed in red brick. The steep thatched roof has a decorative ridge.
This two-storey house has a continuous front jetty facing north, with a large projecting end chimney on the west side, along with extensions and lean-tos on both the west and east. The older part of the house consists of two bays with jettied sections, featuring convex curved tension braces on the first floor and three panels in each bay. On the ground floor, there are two three-light windows flanking a central porch that is now blocked, replaced by two two-light casements. The left-hand part of the house has a horizontal rail and bull-nosed joists, suggesting it may have been heightened. The entrance is now centrally located between single-light windows in the east extension. The roof includes a short square crown-post supported by heavy short braces, and the structure has jowled posts with heavy curved braces supporting the tie-beams.
