Description
The Plume of Feathers Public House is a blacksmith's house and forge built in 1719 for Daniel Maple, a blacksmith. It has been a public house since before 1800 and underwent alterations in the late 20th century. The building features red brick construction with steep red tile roofs and is two storeys high with attics, following a two-cells, end-chimney plan. It is set back from the road, facing south, with a lower former range at the eastern end and a later slated lean-to on the west side. The rear extension has twin gables on the north side.
The south front includes a plat-band, projecting box eaves, and two small gabled dormers on the roofslope, each with small-pane casements. The brickwork consists of plum-red and blue bricks with lighter red dressings. The first floor has two flush-box sash windows with 8/8 panes and flat gauged arches. There is a 6/6 sash window in the west lean-to and rectangular bay windows with an entrance between, all fronted by a symmetrical Doric screen.
