Description
The Maltings is a house that was originally four cottages, dating back to the 15th century, with the hall range rebuilt in the mid-17th century and restored in 1978. It features a timber frame on a brick base, with a rendered exterior and a tiled roof. The building has a two-bay cross wing and a three-bay range to the left, standing two storeys high. The entrance is located between the two left bays and has renewed two-light flush frame small pane casements. There is a 18th-century red brick ridge stack positioned to the right of the center. The left gable end reveals exposed plates and purlins. The cross wing on the right projects slightly, with the first floor jettied on three curved brackets, and it has two two-light casements on each floor along with exposed wall plates. The cross wing also has a lower ridge, resulting in a small weatherboarded gablet at the right end of the main range. The right return features a single light and two two-light casements. At the rear, where the cross wing meets the main range, there is a lean-to addition with a catslide roof extending from the cross wing. Inside, the cross wing has a crown post roof with two-way struts, while the 17th-century range displays smaller scantling, stop-chamfered bearers, straight braces, and a clasped purlin roof.
