Description
The lychgate and adjoining churchyard wall in Ashwell date from the 15th century, while the wall itself was constructed in the 19th century. The lychgate features a timber frame with a plain tile open timber roof supported by two bays. It has a crown post construction that is carried on ties with arched braces, and the side walls are enhanced with curved braces. The gates are made of wood and were added in the 19th to early 20th century, with a brick base also from the 19th century. The churchyard wall stretches 75 meters along the northern side and is built of red brick, with some sections of white brick and clunch where the wall bends near the northern end. It is topped with limestone saddleback coping.
