Description
The dovecote at Wymondley Bury, dating from the 17th century, is a timber-framed structure with a lower section made of red brick that replaces the original lower part of the frame. The upper part features red brick infill. Inside, the dovecote contains nestboxes made from plaster on a lath framework. It has a steep hipped roof covered with old red tiles, which includes gablets that were once used for bird access but are now blocked. This tall square building is located beside the Bury, on the edge of a moat, with a centrally placed doorway on the east side and roof gablets on both the east and west sides. The frame includes corner posts, central posts on each side, and a mid-height rail positioned just above the brickwork. There are ties at the wall-plate level across the corners and long straight tension braces in the walls, with the roof consisting of two structural bays. The entrance features a plank door with old iron fittings and a heavy frame. It is said to have 365 nestboxes.
