Description

The Clock House is a complex of buildings dating from the 17th century, with significant additions in the 18th or early 19th century, originally serving as a stable block to the former Ickleford Manor. It comprises a 17th-century gatehouse, a low stable range along the roadside connecting to the gatehouse, and a larger 18th or early 19th-century stable block. The buildings face the roadside and form a picturesque courtyard group.

The largest element is the former stable block, a rectangular structure with a north gable facing the road and its main front on the east. It is two-and-a-half storeys high and has three flush sash windows with 8/8 panes, along with two box dormers at the eaves, featuring 4/8 panes. A square central clock stage carries a clock face, dated 1819, and a square cupola rises above it, supported by four columns and topped with a vane. There are lower extensions on the west side.

To the east of the stable block is a single-storey former stable that extends to two storeys, forming a two-bay gatehouse with a dovecote on the upper floor, facing into the courtyard. Jowled posts and frame are exposed within the carriageway. The gatehouse has a hipped roof. The stable block has a hipped roof with a cupola, while the gatehouse has a hipped roof. The buildings are constructed of timber frame with roughcast rendering, stuccoed brick, and have steep old red tile roofs.
