Description
The pair of cottages at 3 and 5 The Street date from the late 16th and early 17th centuries and have been extended and altered since their original construction. The building is timber-framed and has a tiled roof, with a large brick stack running along the ridge. It was likely originally a through-passage open hall with a cross wing at the upper end, and the house is set at a right angle to the road, the cross wing fronting onto the road.
The main south-facing front has two storeys and three bays. It features timber casement windows with one, two, or three lights; the first-floor window on the left has diamond-shaped panes. An entrance is located on the left side. A substantial brick stack is positioned to the right, where it joins a projecting gabled cross wing, which has a slightly lower roofline. The cross wing was originally jettied at both the front and side, but is now underbuilt to the front. The jettied side elevation, facing the road, has three curved timber brackets supporting the overhang, and a split flint and brick base. A ground-floor entrance is visible on this side. A 19th-century gabled staircase wing was later added to the rear. A single-storey lean-to extension, weatherboarded and brick, with a small stack on the left return wall, has been added. The roof purlins and wall plates are visible in the gables. The interior remains uninspected.
