Description

Kitt's End Lodge is a house built in 1860 as a lodge for Home Farm at Wrotham Park. It was constructed for G. Byng, the 2nd Earl of Strafford, by architect Henry Clutton. The lodge features polychrome brick with stone dressings and has a machine-tiled roof. The main block is two storeys high and has a gable end facing the road.

An entrance porch is attached to the left corner of the building and projects forward. The porch consists of two bays supported by six stone piers on a brick plinth, with square bases and capitals, and chamfered diagonal shafts. It has a hipped roof and later enclosing glazing. The gabled front has a four-light cross window on the ground floor, which features a stopped hood mould that merges with a prominent string course. There is a plinth at the base and a two-light first-floor window in a chamfered stone surround, with an upper string course that diverts to form a frame. The gable is stone-coped with stone kneelers and patterned burnt headers, and the string courses return around the building.

The returns also have close eaves and similar windows. The right return features a gable, while the left return has a large external stack with chamfered corners on the ground floor and a datestone below a stone course, displaying intertwined S's. The stack rises to three circular shafts capped with stone. The rear gable has detailing similar to the front. There is a 20th-century extension to the right that is not of special interest. The interior has not been inspected.

Attached to the porch on the left is a low brick wall with chamfered stone coping and railings. Although the gates are missing, the wall continues across the entrance drive and steps up to the left.
