Description

62 to 68 High Street is a house that has been converted into shops and a flat. It dates from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame that is rendered and has tiled roofs. It is a double-ended hall house with a two-bay hall and two projecting cross wings that were originally jettied. The structure has two storeys.

On the ground floor, there are shop fronts; the one on the right is from the 19th century and includes fluted pilasters and a cornice. The first floor has a four-light casement window in the hall, while the left or service wing contains two 19th-century sash windows set in reveals. The right or parlour wing features a three-part casement window with two small lights in the center and larger flanking lights, all with leaded panes. The wings have half hips at the front, adorned with decorative bargeboards, and the hall has an eavesboard.

There is a 19th-century cross axial ridge stack at the left end of the hall, and the parlour wing has a slightly lower ridge with a tall stack at the right end. The service wing extends further back and is half hipped at the rear, with another half hipped wing projecting from the rear of the hall.

Inside, the parlour or solar wing showcases exposed timbers, including jowled posts, cambered tie beams, curved braces in the walling, and curved wind braces. This building served as the Robin Hood Inn from 1774 to 1928.
