Description
The shelter shed at Nine Ashes Farm, located 60 metres northwest of the house, dates from the early 19th century. It features a 9-bay design with a 2-bay return across the south front of the West Barn. The rear wall facing the road is made of red brick in English bond. The front is open and arcaded, leading to the yard on the south side of the West Barn. The roof is pitched and covered with slate, supported by king post trusses with one purlin on each slope. Between the posts, the front arcade plate is supported by a cambered timber positioned lower on the posts. There are quadrant braces connecting the tie beams. This shelter shed is a well-preserved example of a traditional farm building and is part of the complete group of farm structures at Nine Ashes, which was referred to in a sale catalogue from 1898 as The Model Covered Homestead. It serves as an important link between the stable and the West Barn along the road.
