Description

The barn at Alswick Hall, located 30 meters to the northwest of the hall, dates back to the 17th century. It has been altered to function as a stable block, featuring a new brick front and end walls added in the early 18th century, along with later lean-to additions at the eastern end. The structure is timber-framed, resting on a red brick sill, and is weatherboarded on the north side with some stepped painted brick infill at the lower parts. The south and east sides are finished in red brick with a chequered pattern using black headers, which has been painted over at the western end. The barn has a steep hipped roof covered in old red tiles.

This long building consists of approximately nine bays, with the seven western bays used as a barn and a wall separating the stable in the eastern part, which includes an inserted floor. A projecting hipped porch is located on the north side of the barn. The south side, which faces the hall, features paired vertical slits at two levels for ventilation, along with three groups of openings under segmental arches, including a wide door flanked by two windows, giving the appearance of stables. Hipped louvred dormers are present on the south roofslope.

Inside, the original roof structure consists of butt-purlins with one purlin for each slope, and the rafters are tenoned into the purlins. The roof also features collar and outswept queen-post trusses, with tie-beams supported by heavy jowled posts that have shaped chins. Straight wind braces are only found in the porch bay. There are mortices indicating the location of a former closed truss that once divided the barn into two parts.
