Description
House. Dating from the 18th or early 19th century, and possibly incorporating an older structure that was then re-faced in brick, Vine Cottage is situated opposite the Post Office on High Wych Lane. It is a symmetrical red brick house of two storeys and three windows wide, set at right angles to the road. The roof is steeply pitched, covered in old red tiles, and extends to the rear in a catslide formation over a single-storey, red brick extension with attics. External chimneys feature timbled brick offsets. The front elevation has dentilled brick eaves and gauged brick segmental arches above all openings. It has recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes. The central door is a 6-panel design with flush beaded panels and the upper two panels are glazed. Two pairs of modern gabled dormers have been added to the rear roof. A large circular cast iron tie rod plate is located next to the front door. The cottage occupies an exposed position on the edge of the village and contributes significantly to the views to the west.
