Description
The Lodge at Briggens House Hotel is a mid 19th century single-storey gatehouse built in a Tudor style, located 300 metres north of Briggens House. It faces north at the entrance to the North Drive and features low-pitched gabled roofs covered with large patent scalloped buff tiles. The main section runs north-south alongside the drive, with a smaller wing set back to the east, its roof positioned at right angles.
The front gable includes a plinth and a four-centred stone arched doorway, which is topped with a square-headed moulded label and has moulded heads as terminals. The entrance has a half-glazed door with small panes. Above the door is a stone coat of arms with the motto 'Pro Ars et Focis', and there is a serpentine, pierced wooden bargeboard with a finial adorning the roof overhang. The wide eaves overhang is supported by elaborate pierced openwork wooden brackets featuring vigorously moulded corbel heads.
On the west flank, there is a toothed eaves course and two sunk panels, each containing a two-light mullioned wooden window with cast iron lattice casements and moulded labels with foliate terminals. A tall brick chimney with two square shafts is centrally located. The lower gabled wing to the east has similar architectural details. This ornamental gate lodge remains largely unaltered and is part of the group of historic buildings at Briggens.
