Description
Bentleys Cottage is a house that dates back to the 15th century or earlier, with a south crosswing and a hall range from the early to mid-17th century. The northern bay is likely from the 19th century and the building was renovated after being stripped to its frame in 1973. It features a timber frame on a low black painted sill, with roughcast walls and exposed framing in the older sections. The roofs are steep and covered with old red tiles, with the south wing having a hipped roof.
The two-storey house faces west and is set back on a large plot next to the village green. The projecting two-storey jettied west crosswing has a catslide outshut to the west, and its front gable has been altered to a hip. The first floor has convex curved tension braces and a central window, while the ground floor features a straight tension brace. The higher two-storey hall range has a central chimney and framing in two bays, with a very narrow central chimney bay where a two-light window now replaces the former lobby-entrance doorway. There is a stair to the rear of the stack and two windows on each floor, with flush two-light casements. The single bay northern extension has matching windows on each floor, and a boarded door provides the entrance into the south wing.
The large square chimney stack has round-headed recesses on each face. Inside, the cottage has exposed timbers, including two original diamond mullioned windows with shutter grooves in the south wing, arched braces, cambered tie-beams, and a collar rafter roof. The axial beams support the floors of the hall range, and the upper room features a four-centred arched brick chamfered open fireplace. The windows have ovolo-moulded mullions, and the south wing displays edge-halved scarf joints with bridled butts in the wallplate.
