Description
Nos 1 and 2 Sylvesters, located opposite the Bell Inn in Widford village, is a house that has been converted into two houses. It dates from the 17th century and was extended in the 18th century, with a date of '1712 WH' noted on the west end. Originally, it was a rectangular house (No 2) facing north, with an L-shaped, two-storey timber-framed structure that has a steep old red tile roof, featuring both hip and gable elements at the west end.
The northern side has a weatherboarded apron, a plank door, and a small-paned window beneath a dripboard. The upper floor features two 19th-century small flushbox sash windows with vertical margin lights. The ground floor of the west side is faced in 19th-century red brick, with two recessed margin light sashes and two similar flushbox sash windows above, flanking a smoothed plaster date panel.
No 1, on the south side, is a narrower two-storey extension from the 18th century, which was formerly two similar cottages, each having a door and one window on each floor. The ground floor is faced in brick that is newer than that of No 2, indicated by a straight joint. The left-hand plank door has been retained, while a margin light sash window has been inserted in the other opening. There is a central red brick chimney, and the south gable is faced in brickwork from two different periods. This historic 17th-century three-unit central chimney house has been extended in the 18th century and subdivided, contributing to the varied architectural group surrounding The Bell Inn.
