Description

Old Post Office Cottages, located on the east side of London Road in Thorley, is a house that has been converted into two residences. It dates back to the 17th century and features a long, two-storey timber-framed structure with plastered walls. The southern part of the building is longer and has a higher, tiled gabled roof. The west-facing front is asymmetrical, with two windows and a low four-panel door that is flanked by 19th-century flush box sashes with six-over-six panes. The upper windows have four-over-four panes and break through a string course, giving the appearance that the eaves have been raised. There are remnants of panelled pargetting on the exterior.

The building has a modern external corner gable chimney and modern weatherboarding on the southern end. A large central axial chimney is shared with the northern end, known as Old Post Office Cottage. The roof is steep and covered with old red tiles. There is also a modern external stack on the northern gable and a rear extension. The rear features a single-storey weatherboarded storage range with small paned modern casement windows. Inside, the cottage retains exposed oak timbers and a large red brick fireplace. It was formerly the laundry cottage for Twyford House. Additionally, there is a 19th-century cast iron pump with a domed cap located about 10 yards east of number 4.
