Description
This headstone, dating from 1711, is located approximately 10 meters southeast of the south aisle of the Church of All Saints in Hertford. It is made of carved Portland stone and features incised inscriptions on both the front and back. The headstone is designed in a naive Baroque style, topped with a pediment and raised scrollwork above the phrase 'memento mori'.
The front inscription honors Mrs. Honor East, the wife of William East, who died in 1711 at the age of 43. It describes her as "one of those prudent wives whose virtue obliged a good report." The reverse side is chamfered and later inscribed to her husband, Mr. MW East, who passed away in 1721 at the age of 55. His inscription notes that he was "a tender master many years to ye poor children of Christ's Hospital London, kept in this town." Although the inscriptions are worn, they are fully documented in Turnor's history from 1830. It is possible that the headstone was moved during the church's rebuilding between 1891 and 1893, as Turnor places it north of the church.
