Description
Nos. 45-53 on Railway Street in Hertford is a terrace of houses that has since become part of a public house and is now used as shops and offices. This building dates from the early 19th century and has been altered in the 20th century. It features yellow brick in Flemish bond on the ground floor, while the first floor is timber-framed, plastered, pebbledashed, and painted. The roof is covered with Welsh slate, and there is a tall chimney on the ridge of Nos. 45 and 47, with lower stacks at the rear of Nos. 49-53.
The building is two storeys high. The first floor has six flush-set sash windows with architrave surrounds; Nos. 45 has two 20-pane windows, while the other houses have squatter windows with fewer panes. The ground floor includes four timber shop windows with moulded mullions and transoms, and there are glazed doors for Nos. 45 and 47. No. 51 features a six-panel door beneath a slim two-light fanlight. Above the shop windows and doors, there are flat weatherboard heads supported by cut profiled brackets. The interior has not been inspected.
