Description

This is a terrace of three houses located on West Street in Hertford. The houses date from the early to mid-19th century. The eastern end of the terrace was truncated in 1964 due to the construction of the Gascoyne Way (Hertford Relief Road). The buildings are constructed of yellow stock brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with low-pitched Welsh slate roofs hidden behind coped parapets, with separate parapets above the party walls. A low chimneystack is located between numbers 5 and 7.

The exterior presents two storeys above basements. The first floor has six recessed 12-pane sash windows, each set within a flat rubbed brick arch. These windows are spaced in a pattern of 1:1:2:2. The ground floor has three 12-pane sashes of slightly greater width, and three arched doorways with 4-panel flush doors incorporating moulded transoms and plain-glazed semicircular fanlights, all recessed within a larger semicircular rubbed brick arch. A slightly wider recessed arched opening featuring a battened door and a blanked fanlight, situated between the doorways of numbers 3 and 5, provides access to a rear tunnel. Stone steps and a stucco plinth feature segmentally arched openings to the basements.

The interior of the properties has not been inspected.
