Description

Yew Tree Cottages, now functioning as one house, originally consisted of two houses dating from the 17th century or earlier, with a small early 19th-century brick house on the south side that has been incorporated and disguised. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, featuring weatherboarding on the front ground floor and a steep red tiled gabled roof. The south part, built of yellow stock brick from the 19th century, has similar finishes. The building is two storeys high, with two widely spaced windows on each floor of both halves. The south half has 19th-century two-light casement windows with Gothick tracery that are recessed, while the older north part has windows set flush with a moulded architrave. The north section has a symmetrical two-room plan with a lobby entry and a large central chimney with three flues located just behind the ridge. The shallower south part had a central door until around 1980 and also features a symmetrical two-room plan with end chimneys, partly external and made of red brick. A modern oak door, framed in a heavy older frame and topped with a small bracketed hood, is centrally located on the north part. Previously, there was a two-storey brick house similar to the south part, adjoining on the north side. This picturesque 17th-century house with its 19th-century addition is part of a varied group within this area of the Conservation Area.
