Description
The well-house and well at Staples Farmhouse, located 8 meters south of the entrance door, is an 18th-century structure associated with an older well that is now capped in concrete over a red brick square curb. The well-house is oak timber-framed and square in shape, open at the sides, and features a steep pyramid roof covered with old red tiles. It measures approximately 3 meters by 3 meters in plan and is accessed by five brick steps from the north. The building has curved braces that support the eaves from square corner posts, and the roof is raised by heavy corner rafters. The well-head, made of oak, is integrated with the framework of the well-house and includes a large wooden hand-wheel with four spokes, which is supported on a timber trestle with a brake lever. Additionally, a long wooden drum spans the well-head and is equipped with an iron toothed wheel driven by gearing on the trestle, featuring spokes to guide the rope. This well-house is an unusual survival.
