Description
The Old Cottage, located at the junction with the main road on Spellbrook Lane West, is a 17th-century building that had its roof raised in the 18th century. Originally, it was a one-and-a-half storey, two-bay house with a central chimney and a staircase likely at the north end, with the entrance probably on the south side. In the early 18th century, the building was raised to two full storeys, featuring a steep gabled roof and a rebuilt chimney. There is a lean-to outshut on the south side. The roof was thatched within living memory but is now covered with red pantiles. The exterior is rendered and colourwashed, with modern wooden casements. Inside, there are exposed joisted posts in the southeast corner and at the centers of the south and north walls, the latter having a mortice for a brace. An old wall plate is exposed in the walls, and an irregular bond 18th-century red brick fireplace has been uncovered. The original outshut on the south side has been replaced by a one-and-a-half storey south wing built around 1955. This is an interesting two-bay house with exposed structural features internally, giving it a picturesque quality.
