Description

Hallingbury Mill is a fully restored watermill built in 1874, located on the site of a mill that was demolished in 1885. The structure has three storeys and a loft. The ground floor is constructed of brick and features arched window and door openings. The first floor and loft are timber framed and covered with vertical weatherboarding, except for the right return wall, which is finished with grey slate tiles. This building is noted as the only known surviving vertical weatherboarded structure of its kind in the South East. It has front and rear lucombs with ornamental iron brackets and red pantile roofs on both the mill and the rebuilt granary. The windows throughout the building are four-paned. The main timber structure is original, with crossbeams tenoned into the main uprights. The main beams measure 12 inches by 9 inches and are 22 feet long, secured with handmade iron ties and dogs. Much of the original machinery has been preserved, including a water wheel that is 7 feet wide and 16 feet in diameter, featuring 48 floats of the low breast type, as well as the pit wheel, trough, spier wheel, crown wheel, and stone nuts. Originally, there were four pairs of stone wheels, but only one pair remains complete. Since its restoration, the mill can produce small quantities of wholemeal flour. There are also two old machines mounted for demonstration inside the building: a warehouse separator and a brush machine.
