Description
The bridge, abutments, and base of a former watermill at Hunsdon Mill House date from the 17th or 18th century. This red brick structure features a two-arched bridge with extended abutments over the River Stort, located on the west side downstream from the red brick base and sill walls of the former timber-framed watermill, which was three storeys high with a bin floor in the roof and was demolished around 1902. The intake sluices, controlled by 19th-century cast iron raising gear, are still operational on the upstream side of the mill base. The bridge has round-headed arches separated by a square-ended cutwater that supports a pilaster buttress, with the face carried up as a parapet. At the north end of the bridge, there is a group of three millstones set into the paving. Hunsdon has had a mill since 1066, likely on this site. This structure represents durable features of an historic watermill with both historical and technological significance and is part of a group with the 17th-century Mill House.
